Cameron Bakers Sponsors Player T-Shirts

A huge thank you goes out to Stuart Young, owner of Cameron Bakers, Selkirk, for generously sponsoring smart new T-shirts for both our senior and junior teams.

Stuart was on hand at Philiphaugh for Saturday’s match against Marchmont 2, and is pictured front centre with skipper Daniel Heard (who is also sponsored by Cameron Bakers), along with the rest of the Selkirk squad members.

Match Report: v Marchmont 2 on 2nd August

Following two consecutive defeats in ESCA League Division 3, Selkirk’s players got themselves back on track at sun-kissed Philiphaugh on Saturday, with a convincing 66-run victory over Marchmont 2.

At the heart of the Souters’ win was a magnificent opening stand of 139 between Greg Fenton and Kenny Paterson. The pair are averaging 49 runs per opening partnership – a valuable springboard at any level of the game.

Vice-captain Greg Fenton looked back to his best form with a typically well controlled innings of 76 from 87 balls.

However, the biggest cheer of the day came when fellow opener Kenny Paterson reached his half-century – the 56-year-old veteran making light of a painful Achilles tendon injury to carry his bat and finish on 51 not out at the end of Selkirk’s innings.

In total he faced 111 balls and managed to keep his concentration in energy-sapping heat, sensibly rotating the strike with batting partner Greg Fenton. No surprise, then, that he picked up the Roy Owen ‘Man of the Match’ Tankard at close of play.

The home side’s No. 3 batter Michael Fenton hit a quickfire 20 to boost the Selkirk total, and at the end of 40 overs the Souters had reached 194-4.

Tom Eden-Bull (2/19) was Marchmont’s most successful bowler, with skipper Tom Jeffreys chipping in with 1/15 and Dhiraj Prakash with 1/35.

Like their hosts, Marchmont openers Jeffreys (25) and Al Squires (51) put together a respectable opening stand. However, the accuracy of Selkirk’s bowling attack meant the pair’s 68-run partnership took 24 overs, well below the required run rate of 4.85.

After 40 overs the visitors were 128-6, still 66 runs short of the home total, leaving Selkirk’s supporters celebrating a much-needed and thoroughly deserved win.

Selkirk’s most economical bowler was Michael Fenton (2/15) – who came within a whisker of registering a hat-trick – while Bob Wilkinson (2/16), Greg Fenton (1/22) and Rory Banks (1/33) picked up for the remaining Marchmont wickets.

The Philiphaugh team are back on the road this Saturday, August 9, when they travel to meet Westquarter & Redding at Sunnyside Road.
