Match Report: v Leith FAB on 17th May

In a contest which featured as many ups and downs as the uneven Leith Links outfield, Selkirk eventually secured a five-wicket win over East League Division 3 leaders Leith FAB on Saturday, to inflict the home side’s first defeat of the season.

Two fine individual performances lay at the heart of Selkirk’s triumph. First change bowler David Gardiner maintained an excellent line and length over his eight overs to finish with four wickets, including the scalp of Leith’s top scorer W. Shah (37).

When it came to the visitors’ innings, an outstanding knock of 58* by Rory Banks helped stop the rot after three of Selkirk’s first four batters were out for ducks.

After winning the toss, Selkirk elected to field, with opening bowlers Greg Fenton (2/13) and his brother Michael (3/28) making clear the Philiphaugh men weren’t there simply to make up the numbers.

David Gardiner (4/25) and Bob Wilkinson (1/12) helped wrap up the Leith FAB innings in the 32nd over, with Selkirk being set a target of 111 to win.

The rapid loss of three early wickets, combined with a pitch showing unpredictable bounce, had the shell-shocked visitors hanging on the ropes.

Not for the first time, opening bat Greg Fenton (24) managed to steady the ship.

Following Greg’s departure it was left to Rory Banks to provide the foundation for victory by scoring a magnificent half-century, and the partnership he struck up with Bob Wilkinson (18*) proved equally important; Wilkinson got the winning runs after steering the ball through Leith’s slip cordon to take his side to 112-5.

A special mention must go to young Michael Gillie. Making his debut alongside his father Blaine, at nine years old Michael is believed to be the youngest player ever to feature in a senior Selkirk side. His is a talent that will help make a major impact on the game in years to come.

Meanwhile Stuart Skeldon made a comeback appearance for the Souters after a lengthy absence, while on Saturday no fewer than three father-and-son combinations graced the Selkirk team: John & Gregor Borthwick, Bob & Shaun Wilkinson and Blaine & Michael Gillie.

It is a day those of us lucky enough to be there won’t forget any time soon.

This coming Saturday, May 24, RHC 3 are the visitors to Philiphaugh.
