Four for Fenton as Souters win at home

Selkirk won their last home game of the season thanks in no small part to in form bowler Greg Fenton (4-17) who dispatched the Westquarter and Redding middle order to back up the hard work of opening bowler Daniel Heard (2-11).

The visitors had won the toss and elected to bowl and would have been happy with their decision with Selkirk struggling at 69 for 5 down at drinks. However, Selkirk Captain Michael Fenton (65) was in stubborn mood and along with Kieran Toor they reached 101 before Toor was bowled by Imran Mazhar who was a different proposition in his second spell completing his second block of overs with two wickets for four runs. The home skipper wasn’t to be denied and having been dropped a couple of times punished the visitors by reaching his 50 and then with his next scoring shot launched the ball down to the pavilion for 6. Selkirk were all out for 155.

Selkirk skipper Michael Fenton top-scored for Selkirk on Saturday with a fine knock of 65.

Daniel Heard opened from the near end at the start of the Westquarter and Redding innings and was edged through the slips in the first over as the visitors found the going tough. Heard produced his best figures in the league on Saturday in a season where he hasn’t got the returns he has deserved. He was too good for the visitors opening bats in his spell and probably only bowled one bad ball on the day which was dispatched by Zulfiqar Chaudhry (19). Heard clean bowled him next delivery.

The visitors had dangerous players in their batting attack but none could get the better of Greg Fenton in the latter part of his spell. Dekker took a lightning catch behind the stumps for Fenton’s first wicket but his next three wickets were all bowled as Westquarter and Redding’s resistance faded. David Gardiner (2-20) knocked off the last couple of wickets with the visiting side well short of their target.
